Dream d3681-s: The Bag's Own Exhale

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the worker came back through the gap in the slat fence, the travelling bag slung against their hip rather than the shoulder. I was a pace behind. Lano trotted ahead of us both, her white fur picking up the last flat daylight off the quarried stones.

The bag was heavier going out than coming back. That had been true each return. I watched the worker's hands - the right hand steadying the strap, the left swinging free - and did not say anything about it. The notebook stayed in my coat.

We passed the row of tool-racks at the outer wall. Two rakes leaned where three had been. A canvas was folded beside them, the kind used to carry small loads between workshops. It had been used; there was a pale mineral stain in one corner. The worker did not look at it.

Inside the low workshop at the south end, a lamp burned down. Someone had left the door ajar and the light fell in a narrow column across the packed-earth floor. The worker stopped at the threshold - not from hesitation, more the way a person pauses before setting down something they have held a long time. The doorway framed them from where I stood, bag and all, hands gone still.

I did not open the notebook.

Whatever the worker had carried back was something that did not need annotation. I had learned this slowly, the way you learn the angle of a step you have taken a hundred times: there is a moment when explaining becomes interference.

The lamp guttered. The worker stepped through. Lano had already gone inside and found the warm spot near the wall and curled there without ceremony.

I stood at the threshold a moment longer. The sky over Tamarackmoss was the slate blue that comes after daylight has given up its last warmth. There were no new fires, no voices from the upper paths. The place was exactly as quiet as it had been.

I went in. The door swung back on its leather hinge. The bag settled against the workshop wall with a sound like a slow exhale, and nobody explained it.
