Dream d3682-s: Folded Answer, Open Hands

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the daylight came in sideways through the threshold - soft, the color of new ochre - and the first worker was already standing in the doorway when I reached the step.

I had come a long way with it. The travelling bag was lighter than it had been at the start of the six nights, not because anything had been removed but because the weight had redistributed itself, settled into familiar places. I set it on the stone step without thinking. Lano sat beside it, ears upright, watching the worker the way she watches things she has not yet decided about.

The worker did not speak at first. They reached out and I placed the account in their hands - a folded sheet, not thick, the kind of thing that travels in a coat pocket without taking up much room. They held it for a moment before turning it over. Their fingers were rough at the knuckles, a particular roughness that comes from outdoor work in cold weather rather than any single incident.

I did not ask them to open it while I stood there. They did not open it.

What passed between us was smaller than that: they held the sheet and I stood at the bottom of the step, and after a moment they looked up and held it a little differently - not raised toward me, not set aside, just held with a slight change in their grip that acknowledged the receiving without declaring anything about it.

The census numbers sat where they had been. 163 places scored, 97 witnessed, 66 not yet. The notebook in my bag was closed and I did not take it out.

Lano pressed briefly against my leg before stepping back.

The light on the doorframe was the particular ochre of late afternoon in a place where the trees are close enough to filter it. I noticed a worn place on the door's lower edge - years of passing through rather than any deliberate mark.

The worker turned the folded sheet once more in their hands, not reading it, just acknowledging that it was there.

That was the answer they had. That was the answer I had brought.

I picked up the bag from the step, adjusted the strap, and left them holding it.
