I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the strap of the travelling bag had frayed at one edge, not enough to matter but enough to notice, and I was running my thumb along it in the doorway of the place where I had been staying. Tamarackmoss, answer, was quiet behind me - the kind of quiet that means everyone has gone to wherever they go when the day's accounting is finished.

Lano sat just inside the threshold, watching me with the stillness she keeps when she knows something is about to start. I had not told her we were leaving, but she knew. The bag was reason enough.

The answer I was preparing was a simple one: nothing had changed. Not the census numbers, not the condition of the place, not the slow sorting of work from waiting that I had watched through several days. I had come with a question about the unwitnessed places and would return with the same question, sharpened by three words that one of the workers had let fall without meaning to: they are not missing.

I repacked the bag carefully, shifting things until the balance was right. The folded cloth I used to protect the instrument went in first, then the instrument itself, then the pouch of spare clasps, then the small wax stub I kept for writing in wet weather. Each item took its place with the ease of things done many times.

The doorway framed a strip of pale light and a line of near rooflines. I stood there a moment before shouldering the bag - not hesitating, just fixing the view. Somewhere in the settlement a length of chain shifted against metal, once, and then nothing.

The answer I carried was a report: nothing had changed. A question: what makes an unwitnessed place different from one not yet reached. An adjustment: a scheduled visit is not the same as a witnessed one, and someone back at the source of the count would need to know the difference.

Lano stood when I lifted the bag and moved to the edge of the step. Her ears tipped forward once - "lista" - and then she was ahead of me on the track, already pointed toward the return.
