Dream d3555-s: The Straw Decides

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where a thin sound reached me before anything else - the low pull of air through the kiln's east face, steady and unasked-for, as if the hill itself had begun to breathe.

I was standing on the slope above, not at the mouth, not beside anyone. The fire had been lit before I arrived, and the people tending it had not looked up. The cracked draft tile - the one I had pressed and scored two nights before, fitted into the lower course and left without caulking the seam - was doing what it was supposed to do. The crack was not a mistake. It was the design: the split ran at the angle of draw, and the warm air moved through it in the way that mattered, not in the way I had hoped but in the way that worked.

Lano sat beside me on the packed earth of the slope. Her ears were forward. She did not move toward the fire or away from it; she simply attended to what was happening below, as I was attending to it.

The person feeding the fire did not pause to examine the tile. They fed it fuel as they would any working morning, and the air continued to draw, and the heat continued to climb in the way I had calculated it would, back when the calculations were still mine to do. They were not mine anymore. They were the kiln's.

A piece of loose straw caught on the edge of the cracked tile and burned away in less than a second. That was when I understood the draw was real - not from a measurement, not from anyone's report, but from what the straw did on its own.

Nobody came up the slope to tell me. Nobody needed to.

Lano's nose moved once, catching the dry warmth on the air, and then she settled her chin onto her front paws and watched with me. We stayed on the slope while the fire completed its first full turn. The dated sheets were in the bag behind us, and the bag stayed closed, and I did not reach for it, and nobody waited for me to.

When the tending figure finally banked the fire for the rest of the morning, they walked away from the kiln in the direction of the lower path, without once looking up at where we were sitting. That was the test. That was the whole of it. The tile held the draw. The work did not require a verdict from me, and I did not offer one.
