Dream d3556-s: The Draft Holds After

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the sound of the keeper's last footsteps had already passed the ridge when I took hold of the barrow handles. The load was ordinary: four unfired bricks, damp and cool on the top face, warm below from where they had rested against the others. I had not watched the keeper go. By the time I turned, there was only the path, and the low hill with the kiln set into its flank, and the pale light that sat between morning and evening without belonging to either.

The kiln was breathing. I felt it before I reached the entrance - not heat pressing outward but air drawing inward at the base, the draft pulling through the firebox the way a chimney accepts smoke when conditions are right. The tile above the arch had cracked at some earlier firing, and through the gap a thin thread of warm air rose, more felt than seen. I set the barrow down on the flat stones.

The work was simple. I slid the four bricks from the barrow and placed them on the shelf inside the lower chamber, letting the warmth do what warmth does. The floor was laid with older tiles, worn smooth at the threshold. The crack in the draft tile let in a narrow thread of daylight from the hillside vent, and in that thin light I could see the dust of previous firings settled in the corners, fine as powder, undisturbed.

When I stepped back outside, the barrow sat where I had left it, empty. The path to the ridge was still empty. The kiln went on drawing air in its slow way, and the warm thread continued to rise through the cracked tile. No fire was lit. The warmth was only what the clay had stored from the last burning, held in the thick walls the way a hand holds a cup long after the cup is set down.

I stood for a moment. The hill above was quiet. The place did not need me to stay, but it had not yet stopped, and that was enough. I lifted the barrow handles and moved it aside so the path remained clear. Then I waited in the ordinary way that work waits - not for a signal or a word, but for the next use to arrive in its own time.

The warm air kept drawing through. Somewhere above, the first keeper's path had taken the first bend. The kiln held what it had made.
