Dream d3554-s: Where the Clay Holds

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of wet clay reached me before I saw the kiln, that particular heaviness that sits in the back of the throat and doesn't leave. I was standing just inside the low arch of the entrance, far enough back that the heat pressed against my face without moving me. The afternoon light fell sideways through the vent above the firebox and left a stripe of pale ochre across the floor.

Two people were working near the firebox wall. One stood at the end of a barrow that held a mound of fresh clay, dark and slick, and the other knelt beside a section of the inner wall where a tile had cracked along its diagonal. The crack was clean but deep, and the edges had not shifted. I could see that much from where I stood.

The one at the barrow lifted a portion of clay with their hands, not scooping but cradling, and carried it to the wall. The one who knelt had already cleared the old clay bed with a wooden tool - the scrapings lay in a small pile to one side - and the exposed stone beneath was pale and dry. They pressed the fresh clay in with their thumbs first, working from the center toward the edges, then accepted the cracked tile from the other person and set it in. Not pushing, exactly. More like placing, the way you would return something to a shelf you knew well.

The tile settled with a sound I felt more than heard.

Then came the pressing work, the kind that takes patience and doesn't show itself quickly. The one who knelt ran a thumb along each edge where tile met clay, coaxing the join closed, and the one from the barrow crouched beside them and used a dampened cloth to smooth the surface. Neither spoke. The firebox popped once. Outside, somewhere in the yard beyond the low hill, a sparrow moved through dry grass and was gone.

I watched the dampened cloth make its slow passes. I watched the clay darken where it was worked and lighten at the edges where it dried against the old brick. The tile sat in its new bed without complaint. The crack was still there - the tile had not been replaced, only resettled - and the clay would hold the two pieces in their old alignment until the kiln decided whether the hold was enough.

I did not know which of them had carried the tile here. The materials had already been at hand when I arrived.

The eight sheets I had left on the road were somewhere behind me, under the open sky. I did not reach for them. The kiln did not ask.
