Dream d3553-s: The Draft Goes Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the kiln keeper was still crouched beside the cracked draft tile when I came down the hill path with the barrow. She glanced up, shifted her weight to one side, and made room along the low wall without a word. I set the barrow handles down and crouched beside her.

The tile had been cracked as long as anyone had used this kiln - a diagonal split from upper left to lower right, held together by the clay of the wall itself. We both looked at it for a moment.

Lano had come down the hill with me. She stopped a few feet from the kiln mouth, ears going flat against her skull. Her nose lifted, reading something in the air I hadn't caught yet. Then she barked - one sharp sound, not directed at either of us, directed at the kiln.

The smell reached me then. Acrid. Not the clean wood-smoke of a good burn but something chemical and wrong, like oil cloth left too close to a flame. The keeper was already moving toward the side vent, where a salvaged iron bracket had held the secondary draft arm in position for three seasons. The bracket had come from a different kiln, a larger one, fitted and shimmed to work here. It had worked. Past tense.

What I saw when she pulled the vent cover was a bracket failed at its collar - the metal gone dark and crumbly where the weld had been, the arm it held now lying against the stone with no tension. The secondary draft was dead. Without it, air through the main chamber would back-stack, the heat would pool rather than pull through, and whatever load was inside the kiln would cook unevenly at best and crack at worst.

The keeper set the vent cover aside and looked at the failed bracket without touching it. Lano pressed her flank against my leg, still alert, still reading the air.

There were no replacement brackets. We both knew that. The nearest source of iron that could be shaped right was three settlements over, and the kiln needed the draft corrected before the next firing cycle, not after a journey.

The keeper picked up a length of wire from the shelf along the low wall and turned it in her hands. Not a solution - the beginning of one. Something to hold the draft arm at the right angle while we thought.

The tile stayed cracked. The dated sheets in the corner of the shed stayed where they lay, face down, untouched. Neither of us opened anything. We looked at the wire, and the arm, and the stone, and the smoke beginning to back up through the vent.
