Dream d3552-s: Where the Crack Begins

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the kiln under the low hill breathed a thin smoke from the lower vent, the kind that tells you the fire has settled into itself. The light outside was pale and even, the color of old bone, and I followed the keeper through the side entrance where the draft tiles line the wall in a row, each one the length of a forearm.

She stopped at the third tile from the left.

I had not seen the crack at first. The tile looked the same as the others - the same dark rust-orange, the same soot-gray rim at the edge. But she crouched and pressed her palm flat against the face of it, not where the surface showed discoloration but lower, near the base where the tile met the mortar seam. She moved her hand slowly upward, not pushing, only feeling.

The crack ran from the lower right corner diagonal, nearly to the center. Not wide. The width of a thread in places, wider where the heat had worked the clay over many firings. Her fingers found the widest point and stopped there. She pressed two fingers across it, measuring the gap, then drew them apart to see how much space lay between.

I watched her hand. She did not shake her head. She did not step back. The gesture was the same as you might use on a horse's leg, or on a door you have been meaning to hang right - not alarm, not dismissal. The material had moved. She was learning how far.

The air in the kiln held the warmth of the last firing even now, hours after the fire had gone low. I could feel it through my shirt, a smell of old clay and char and something deeper, mineral, like the inside of a well.

She moved her thumb along the crack from the wide point toward the corner. It narrowed again near the base, where the clay had held. She did not write anything down. She pressed the tile once more, flat-palmed, as if confirming what the fingers had found, and then stood.

The eight dated sheets in the outer room stayed where they had been left. The notebook on the shelf stayed shut.

She walked to the next tile and ran a knuckle along its edge, listening, not measuring. That one made no sound.

I stayed near the cracked tile for a moment after she moved on, looking at the place her hand had been. The wear was there. It had been there. She had only been the first to find the measure of it.
