Dream d3523-s: The Frayed Rope Holds

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the water at the shallow crossing ran low and pale, the stones visible beneath its surface like a floor seen through smoked glass. I stood on the near bank and watched. The light was the kind that doesn't announce itself - soft and diffuse, making everything the same weight, the same quiet ochre and grey.

The older one was already there. He held a pole against his hip and watched the far bank with the patience of someone who had watched it many times. His boots were wet to the ankle. The mooring rope beside him frayed at one end where it passed through a rusted iron ring, and he had not repaired it - had perhaps decided it did not need deciding yet.

Then the younger one came down the bank path. He carried the same kind of pole. He didn't call out, didn't stop when he saw the other man already at the crossing. He came down to the water's edge and found a place on the bank a body's width away, and stood.

Neither spoke first. Neither stepped back.

The older one shifted his weight slightly to the left. The younger one set his pole in the shallows at a small angle from the first. The frayed rope hung between them without being held by either, moving a little in the current.

I watched them work out some version of the same task across the same water. There was a low wooden platform tied at the crossing point, barely a raft - it moved back and forth as needed, as requested. The older one pushed it across when a woman with bundles appeared on the far bank. The younger one took the mooring rope on the return. They didn't divide it in any formal way. They just found what the other was not doing.

A heron stood in the shallows downstream, watching the water for its own reasons.

The frayed rope was still frayed when I looked again. The crossing kept doing what it does: moving people from one bank to the other through water that comes up no higher than the shin.

When I looked back the last time, the younger one was demonstrating something about the angle of the pole - not with words, just with his arm. The older one watched and adjusted his grip by a fraction. No verdict passed between them. The rope held the platform to the bank, frayed and sufficient.
