Dream d3522-s: Signal at the Shallow Ford

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the water ran clear across the gravel beyond Dunnesquare, shallow enough to show every stone on the bed, and I stood on the near bank watching a figure work at the mooring post.

The rope was old. I could see it from where I stood - the fibers along the lower section had softened to a gray fringe, the twist gone loose where it met the iron ring. The keeper crouched at the post and ran a hand along the length of it, not gripping, just touching, the palm moving slowly up from the ring to where the wear began.

Lano sat beside me on the bank, her ears forward, her nose working the cool air off the water. She had been still for a while, watching the same spot I was watching.

The keeper's hand stopped at a particular point and stayed there. Not pressing. Just resting against the frayed section, feeling the texture of what remained. The rope was not cut; it was not failed. It was worn to a particular degree, and the hand was measuring that degree without naming it aloud.

I didn't speak. Neither did the keeper.

Then Lano's ears went flat against her skull, sudden and complete. She turned her head toward the signal towers on the eastern bank - the low structures with the disc arrays that faced the river settlements upstream. Something shifted in the air there, though I couldn't say what kind of shift. Lano gave one sharp bark, short and firm, and pressed her flank hard against my leg.

Across the water, a figure emerged from the signal house. Moving quickly toward the tower steps. The keeper at the mooring post looked up.

I couldn't hear the words but the motion was unmistakable - pointing at the receiving array, gesturing back toward the house. The keeper at the rope rose and looked across without letting go of the frayed section entirely, just loosening the grip.

Lano did not stop watching the towers.

The signal that had come in was not from the upstream settlements. That much was clear from the posture of the figure at the steps - the slight halt before the next gesture, the arm moving to point not upstream but somewhere beyond, off the line of the known beacons. Not broken. Not familiar. A pattern that fit nothing in any of the sequences I had seen marked on the board at the relay house.

The keeper took a last measure of the rope with one hand, thumb and two fingers spread to mark the worn span, then walked toward the signal house without haste.

The rope stayed as it was at the post, frayed but holding.

Lano stayed pressed against my leg and did not bark again.
