Dream d3524-s: The Thread the Water Trusts

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the crossing came to me out of soft morning light - the shallow ford beyond Dunnesquare, the water running over pale stone in a way that made the bottom visible, amber and grey beneath the current. Two figures stood at the near bank, and I watched from a slight rise of ground where the reeds had been cut flat by some earlier hand.

The older one, grey-haired, sleeves pushed to the elbow, held the frayed end of the mooring rope between his palms. The rope had parted somewhere in the middle of its length, and the two ends lay on the bank between them, the fibers loosened and light. The younger crouched close, separating the strands methodically, his hands working without hurry.

I did not go down to help. The water moved past the stones.

The older ferryman began to weave the strand ends together, interleaving them the way you work any splice - unlaying each tail to a precise length, then tucking the yarns back through one another so the join holds not by knot but by the pressure of the rope against itself. The younger watched the first tucks, then took up the secondary strands and continued without instruction.

Lano sat beside me on the cut reeds. She had a small wet stone in her mouth - not chewing, just carrying it - and her nose moved once toward the water before she settled again, watching the two men with her ears slightly forward.

The rope grew whole by increments. Neither man spoke. The only sounds were the current, the faint scrape of wet fiber being worked, and somewhere behind us the low knock of a timber against something solid in the shallows. When the last strand was tucked and the splice was mallet-pressed flat on the bank stone, the older ferryman lifted the rope and passed it once through his grip, checking the tension along its length. He handed it to the younger, who did the same.

They did not test it further. They did not name who would take it first. The younger coiled the repaired length and laid it at the post on the near bank without discussion, the way a thing is returned to where it belongs when the work is done and neither person needs to claim the finishing.

I stood on the rise until the light had moved enough to change the color of the stones. Lano set the small stone down between her paws.
