Dream d3361-s: The Keeper Does Not Stop

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the stones along the river edge had dried pale in the afternoon and were still pale now, in the hour before full dark, when I came through the lower door of the Fennbridge house with the notebook under my arm.

Lano moved ahead of me through the corridor, her white shape reading the air at each threshold. The house carried its own quiet - not empty quiet but the quiet of something that has been present for a long time and does not need to announce itself. A lamp burned low in the room to the left. I stopped near the door and set the notebook on the ledge beside it, not on the table, not placed where someone would reach for it, but set there with the spine facing the room.

The surveyor was at the far wall, tracing something with a fingertip I could not see from where I stood. The relay clerk sat on the step between rooms, writing in a small book of their own. Neither looked up.

Lano sat beside the ledge and looked at the notebook once, then toward the far window.

Then the keeper came through. She crossed the corridor with the unhurried pace of someone moving between tasks, glanced through the open door - I saw her eyes go to the notebook, rest there a moment - and continued into the next room. A door settled behind her. Not closed. Settled.

The notebook did not move. The lamp continued. The stones outside were visible through the window, the near ones catching what light there was, the far ones gone into grey.

The distant reader stood in the corner I had not noticed, as still as something placed there before I arrived. The relay clerk turned a page.

I waited by the door for a time I did not measure. Lano's tail moved once - slow, like thinking - and she tucked her nose toward her paw without lying down, watching the door the keeper had gone through.

The Fennbridge house had seen this before. Three times the accounts named it, and none of them explained it, and now it was doing the same thing again, going on, letting the night come in from the river and the stones, neither toward the notebook on the ledge nor away from it.

I did not ask. The place did not answer. The lamp burned. Lano breathed.
