Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3360-s: The Unentered Column
2026-10-05 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the counting room at Fennbridge smelled of chalk and cold iron, the kind of cold that settles into stone after long disuse rather than from any wind. The tally board ran across the back wall, rows of notches in dry oak, most of the pegs absent from their holes. Two columns were crossed and dated in a hand different from the others.
I set the notebook on the shelf beside the board and opened it to the first blank page, then stepped back into the doorway. Lano sat at my left ankle, her nose working the air that came in from behind us, the outdoor smell of damp moss and water-slicked timber. She did not go farther in.
The keeper moved between the shelves without looking at the board or the notebook. She lifted a bundle of cord from a peg, checked the knot, replaced it. Her attention was on the cord, on the peg, on the small orderly world of the shelf. The notebook lay open and she passed within an arm's length of it twice.
The relay clerk came in from the far door. She carried a small folded square of paper, read something from it, refolded it, tucked it into her coat. She glanced at the tally board the way a person glances at a window - not to read it, but to confirm the light was still what it was. She left the way she came.
The surveyor stood at the single window for a long time with his back to the room. I could see his reflection in the dark glass, one hand flat against the frame. He did not turn.
From somewhere beyond the far wall came the distant reader's voice, not the words, only the cadence of someone speaking quietly to themselves while they work. It passed through a gap between the stones and then stopped.
I waited in the doorway. Lano's tail moved once, a low slow motion, then settled. The notebook's pages did not lift - no draft reached them where they lay. The tally board held its two crossed columns and its many empty pegs, and that was what it held, and the room went on being what it was, and Fennbridge went on being what it had been both times before: present, dormant, asking nothing.
I did not close the notebook when I left. I carried it back out with me, still open at the first blank page, because the blank page was also a record and Fennbridge had already answered in the only way it answers.
