Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3362-s: The Date and the Blank
2026-10-05 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I stood at the bank edge in Fennbridge with the notebook under my arm, the cover still closed, and Lano pressed against my ankle in the dark the way she does when a place feels settled but not finished.
The clerk was already there, seated at the low table the surveyor had leveled against a post last season. She opened her own record, wrote the date in a clean hand, and drew a line under the tally board entry - but left the column to the right of it empty. The rest of the page stayed white. She did not look at my notebook.
The keeper moved along the far bank. Not toward us. Just moving, the way water moves in shallow weather, going the direction it goes. The surveyor had marked the four corners of the structure nearest the water sometime before this night; the stakes were still there, their paint faded from what the paint had been to something the color of old moss. I noted the stakes. I did not move them.
Lano stepped off the bank path and put her nose down into the reeds. A small sound came from her - not alarm, something more like recognition. Then she came back.
The distant reader stood at the other end of the bridge, facing away, toward whatever is beyond Fennbridge on that side. I carried the notebook in that direction but stopped before I reached the end. The distant reader did not turn.
There is a question a place can ask without words. Fennbridge asked it the way dormant places ask things: by continuing. The water moved. The clerk's pen made no sound after the date was set down. The keeper turned at the far bend and was no longer visible.
I stood at the center of the bridge with the notebook. Lano sat beside me and watched the water. I did not open the notebook. No one came for it. The night continued in the same direction it had been going, and Fennbridge continued with it.
When I left I still had the notebook. It was not heavier. It was not lighter. It was the same weight it had been when I arrived, which is the weight of something that has been carried somewhere without yet finding the person it belongs to.
