Dream d3351-s: The Flat Green Asking

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the water meadow came up to meet our boots before we saw it, the ground going soft in the dark and Lano moving ahead into the reed margin with her nose low to the damp.

The meadow's flatness was its character, not its condition. The horizon sat at the same distance in every direction and the sky pressed down evenly on all of it. The notebook lay against my spine in the pack, pressed flat the way it had been since the road bent toward Brackenfall, and I had not opened it.

The keeper stood at the drainage ditch with a long-handled tool and didn't raise it when we crossed the low stile. The surveyor had walked the southern edge in the afternoon light; now the surveyor stood still at the center of the field and listened to something I couldn't hear. The clerk had the ledger open at an earlier page - an older entry, from one of the six visits recorded there - and was not writing. Only reading back. The clerk's finger held the line.

Lano came back from the reeds. She shook once, drops catching what little light the sky held, and sat beside me with her ears angled toward the ditch.

The keeper's tool moved in the current - not a stroke, a settling. The water at the ditch head was shallow and very slow. The meadow grasses caught the ambient light and flattened it out across a wide distance.

The distant reader stood at the far field margin where the track thinned to nothing, not moving toward us, present the way the reed bed was present.

I didn't open the pack. I stood at the mid-meadow and let the place go on beside what I was carrying, the way a field does when it has been here longer than any account of it. The notebook was on the road and the road had brought it here and the meadow had neither confirmed nor refused it. The question remained in the air between us.

Lano found a moist hollow in the grass and curled into it, pressing her white side into the dark ground.

The surveyor noted something at the margin of a sheet. The keeper moved along the ditch toward the culvert. The clerk closed the ledger on the old entry.

Nothing had changed and nothing had ended. The sheet would name six visits and now the seventh stood in the wet grass, and the place was dormant, which is not the same as finished, and I did not explain the difference.
