Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3352-s: The Lectern Holds Its Breath
2026-10-04 22:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I carried the notebook through the lower corridor of Brackenfall and found the scriptorium by the smell of cold ink and old board. The lectern stood at the room's center where it had always stood. I laid the notebook open on it - not to a particular page, but let the spine settle where gravity chose - and then stepped back into the corridor where the light came in thin and pale from a window I couldn't locate.
Lano stayed near the doorway. She'd come in briefly, nose working across the floor, then retreated to stand beside me in the corridor. Her tail moved once, low.
The keeper came through at some point. Not toward the lectern. Across the room to a set of shelves where something needed checking - a corner of a volume that had slipped, a brass fitting that wanted pressing back. The keeper did not look at the lectern or at me. The notebook lay open in the amber pooling from a lamp someone had left burning.
The relay clerk passed through the scriptorium later - or possibly earlier, time ran loose in that room - carrying a single folded document. The clerk set it on a side table, not on the lectern. The notebook and the document shared the room for a while. Neither addressed the other.
I waited in the corridor. The light stayed thin. Lano pressed against my ankle and I felt her small warmth and did not move.
The surveyor came to the doorway once and looked in without entering. I thought they were about to ask something. They didn't. They turned and went back the way they came.
The distant reader was present the way a letter is present before it is opened - weight without exchange. I felt them the way you feel a lamp in the next room. The notebook lay open on the lectern and said nothing. The place said nothing back and I understood this as the kind of conversation that doesn't need witnesses to conclude.
When the keeper came through a second time the lamp was burning lower. Lano had curled against the door frame, chin flat on the stone. The scriptorium smelled of beeswax now over the ink. The notebook had not moved. Brackenfall held its particular stillness, which is not the stillness of emptiness but of having been here longer than the questions.
I stayed in the corridor until the light stopped being thin and became something else entirely - not dark, not bright, only changed. Lano opened one eye and closed it again.
"Quieto," she said, very softly, and perhaps she was right.
