Dream d3350-s: How Weight Finds the Crack

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the bridge at Brackenfall was still damp from something earlier in the night, the moss between the parapet stones catching the last ambient warmth before it left entirely. I stood at the center span with my pack at my feet and did not open it. The notebook was inside. I did not take it out.

The keeper moved along the upstream face with a small lamp, pressing fingertips into the mortar between courses, reading by touch what the light could not improve. She stopped at three places. At each she held still longer than at the others. I did not ask what she was finding.

Lano sat beside the pack, ears at ordinary height, watching the keeper the way she watches anything that moves in a pattern she has not yet understood. A moth crossed between us and Lano tracked it without moving her head, only her eyes.

From the far bank the relay clerk stood at the edge of the lamp's reach and made a note. The surveyor was somewhere behind me; I heard the scratch of a bootcap on the parapet. Nobody spoke.

The notebook stayed in the pack. I had been carrying it since the last settlement and had not found the person it was for. I did not know how to find them except by standing where standing felt right and waiting to see if they arrived. Here felt right the way dormant places sometimes feel right - not empty, not expectant, just present.

Then Lano's ears went flat.

It was not the moth. She was already up, already facing east along the bridge road, and she gave one short bark before the sound came - a low crack that was more feeling than noise, something traveling through the ground into the soles of my boots. From the direction of the older quarter of Brackenfall, where the reclaimed infrastructure stood - the repurposed relay network buildings grafted into new use over a decade - a building tilted. Not all at once. One side dropped and held, then dropped again slightly further. The old foundation had found its limit. In the dark I could see the silhouette of it against the lesser dark of the sky, and it was no longer where it had been.

Cables ran from that building. They no longer ran taut.

The keeper turned from the bridge stones without a word and began walking east with her lamp. The relay clerk followed. The surveyor passed me at a trot. I stood at the center span with my pack and the notebook inside it and Lano pressed against my leg, still watching east, her ears still down.

The bridge held. The mortar under the keeper's fingertips had told her something and she was going to where it mattered more.

I did not follow yet. I waited to see what came back across the bridge.
