Dream d3188-s: Seam and Settled Stone

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the garden court at Yarrowfold held the light low and even, the kind of afternoon that does not press toward evening but sits in the middle of itself. Stone walls at half height, a central plinth worn smooth at the corners, the armature rising from its fixed place at the north wall without inviting explanation.

The Horizon-Surveyor arrived reading from the Relic-Watcher's account. Not her own record of this place - the other's. She moved to the eastern edge and read without looking up, measuring nothing this visit.

Rurik slipped through the gap where the garden wall met the outer court and took the warm flat stone near the plinth. He settled there, tail wrapped close, amber eyes on the armature.

The Anomaly-Hand carried the Bedrock-Reader's notes from the previous interval and held the pages open against her thigh as she moved along the northern wall. Where the pale cyan seam ran from one paving stone to the next, she crouched - not to mark it, but to read. The Bedrock-Reader read from her notes in return, the Tally-Reader's count, keeping it exact.

Lano trotted the perimeter of the central stone. She sniffed at the base of the plinth, ears perked at something below the threshold of our hearing, and then she picked up a small fragment of paving - pale, smooth, catching the light oddly - and carried it two steps before setting it down gently. She sat beside it. I wrote nothing about the stone. The count already held sixty-six spoken accounts and this was not a new one.

The Tally-Reader read aloud from the Warden's first account here: the low count, the conditions as witnessed, the dormant note. The Warden listened without correcting. Silence - silencio - gathered in the corner where the armature met the wall, and Lano's nose twitched once in its direction.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the unreckoned machinery and did not start it. The Relic-Watcher read from the Horizon-Surveyor's account of the threshold. Six visits, and none of us had added what was not witnessed.

We carried the outgoing account forward with the same count, the same dormant status, the same pale cyan seam noted and unexplained. Rurik blinked slow at the armature and washed one paw. The court received us as it had before: the same silence, differently arrived.
