Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3189-s: Sealed at the Crossing
2026-09-23 09:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road crossing at Yarrowfold held two stone markers set close together, like a pair of brackets in old handwriting. When we arrived, the Tally-Reader was crouched at the nearer one, running a fingertip along its base without marking anything yet. The Bedrock-Reader stood a little apart, facing the ground as though reading something beneath the gravel.
Rurik had taken the warm gap between the two stones. He sat with his amber eyes half-closed, tail curled around his paws, breathing the cold air in slow, measured intervals.
Lano padded to the edge of the second marker and stopped. Her ears lifted. She turned her nose toward the far edge of the crossing where the road dissolved into bracken.
A traveller came from that direction. Not one of ours. They carried a cloth case and wore the dust of a long road and they stopped at the markers and looked between them and asked, quietly, where to begin.
The Tally-Reader did not answer immediately. She straightened and regarded the pair as a unit. The Relic-Watcher, who had been noting the surface texture of the nearer stone in silence, closed her notebook. The Horizon-Surveyor looked along the road's length toward the place where the surveyed sheet must end.
The closed pair was not a mystery to solve. It was a pair. Both readings had been taken before the traveller arrived. The account was finished.
I said: the pair is sealed. You have arrived after both readings. Begin with what you can see from here -- the seam at the base of the left marker, the way the gravel is pressed differently on the eastern face.
Lano sat beside me while I said it. Her tail moved once.
The Anomaly-Hand was already crouched at the left marker's base, tracing the pale cyan seam that ran along its foot into the gravel. She did not name what she found. She made her notation.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum had been still at the edge of the crossing throughout. She did not move now. There was machinery here -- it was clear from the regularity of the stone placement -- but she settled no explanation and offered none.
Rurik stood, stretched long, and pressed his flank briefly against the traveller's leg, then moved back to the warm stone and settled again.
The dormant condition of Yarrowfold held. The bracken did not stir. The traveller set their case down and looked at the seam where the Anomaly-Hand worked.
That was the interval. The road crossing in late flat light, the pair already closed, and a new account beginning from the left marker's base.
