Dream d3187-s: The Fold Kept Its Own Count

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the roof garden had been growing without permission. That was the first thing I noticed when the Horizon-Surveyor pointed: moss between the tiles, lavender gone to stalk and seed, a rusted trellis that had become its own small architecture. Lano padded ahead, nose tracking the seam between old stone and newer clay, and Rurik took the south corner immediately, settling his weight against the warmth the slates had held all afternoon.

From here we could see them all. Nine paths. The Tally-Reader named them without raising their voice, one for each gap in the surrounding walls, each converging line in the land below. None matched the drawings. The Relic-Watcher spread the folded sheet on the low parapet and we stood around it in the cooling air, looking from page to ground and back.

The Bedrock-Reader said nothing but touched the parapet stone with two fingers, feeling for the signature of the strata beneath.

The paths had their own logic. Two followed the water-shadow, where rain had cut slow and certain over years. One aimed for the gap between the elder outbuildings at an angle no planner would have chosen. Another arrived from the north at a slight lean, as though it had walked a slope and forgotten to straighten when the slope ended.

The Anomaly-Hand crouched near the trellis and pointed at a pale cyan seam running through the coping stone, the same emission we had logged in the cold lower chambers. Up here it was thinner, the color of certain mornings. I set a marker stone beside it while Lano watched, then she sniffed the stone carefully and looked away toward the fold.

Dormant, Yarrowfold. Five visits and the fold returns the same answer: not closed, not open, but something between waiting and having already made its decision. The Warden of the Deep Stratum wrote nothing, only turned toward the central courtyard below and let the silence settle.

Rurik crossed from his corner and sat in the doorway leading back to the stairs, amber eyes on the nine paths, blinking once.

The Horizon-Surveyor folded the drawings and put them away.

Lano settled at the parapet edge, small and white against the slate, chin on her paws. She exhaled once toward the fold below.

"Mira," she said.
