Dream d3184-s: The Thread Uncalled

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the binding room held a particular quality of light, the kind that arrives through narrow slit-windows and settles on surfaces without warming them. The Binder laid out the nine pairs of field pages across the long table, each pair face-to-face, and set the coil of linen thread to one side where it remained coiled.

Lano moved along the edge of the room, nose low against the stone floor. Her nails made small ticking sounds between the silences. Rurik had taken the sill of the highest window and sat there with his back to the room, amber eyes fixed on whatever lay beyond the glass.

The Tally-Reader stood at the far end of the table and counted the pairs aloud without touching them. I watched the Horizon-Surveyor hold a straight edge against the margin of the last page, measuring where the surveyed sheet ended - not what lay beyond, only the line itself. The measurement was recorded. The line remained what it was.

The Anomaly-Hand worked with a small lamp, drawing it slowly along the pages until the pale cyan traces showed through the paper where they had been noted in the field. Each trace had a corresponding mark. None of the marks were explained.

I lifted the coil of linen thread and turned it once in my hands. The weave was tight. Lano sat down near my feet and looked up at me briefly. "Quieta," she said, then turned away to investigate a gap between two stones near the baseboard.

The Relic-Watcher moved from pair to pair, writing in the margin beside each arrangement without looking up. The entries were short. I did not read them.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum sat in the corner chair with the ledger open across both knees, making entries in a column I could not see from where I stood. At one point the Warden paused, pen lifted, and remained still for a long moment. Then the pen descended and the entry continued. No explanation was offered and none was sought.

The Bedrock-Reader had spread a separate sheet beside the nine pairs - older, crosshatched with strata notation - and was tracing the underlying formations with one finger just above the surface, not quite touching. The binding room at Yarrowfold had been still for some time. This visit was being recorded as distinct from the earlier three.

I set the linen thread back beside the pages. Rurik dropped from the sill without sound and walked once around the table before settling beneath the Binder's chair. The linen remained uncut. The nine pairs lay in their proper order, each page facing its companion, nothing yet joined.
