Dream d3183-s: Darker Before the Hollow

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came back to Yarrowfold in the afternoon, and the terrace was unchanged except for the light.

The Tally-Reader noted the time in the margin. The Horizon-Surveyor walked the far edge where the stone railing had crumbled into a low shelf, and I watched her measure the drop beyond with a length of cord. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the northern seam, tracing the pale cyan line that ran beneath the flagstones without breaking the surface. We had seen it before. It was still there.

Lano moved ahead of us along the terrace, her nose working at a crack between two stones. She found the cup before any of us did. It sat in a recess in the low wall, the kind of hollow that might have been deliberate or might have been wear. She sat beside it and her ears flattened slightly, then rose again.

The cup was the darker vessel. I had noticed this on the first visit but had not said so then. The trough at the far end of the terrace, longer and open to the same sky, held no shadow yet. The cup's depth worked against it. Both stood in the same afternoon light, and the cup was already dim inside while the trough stayed pale grey at its lip.

The Bedrock-Reader pressed a palm to the flagstone at the cup's base. The Relic-Watcher recorded the position of each vessel in the log, not the interpretation, only the position. The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the trough and looked into it for a long time without speaking.

Rurik had found a warm patch of stone near the trough. He lay stretched there, amber eyes half-closed, tail making one slow arc and then nothing. When the Warden of the Deep Stratum moved, Rurik watched without turning his head.

Yarrowfold was still dormant. I added a note beside the earlier account of this place: the cup darkens first, and the trough follows, and in between is an interval the Tally-Reader counts but does not explain.

Lano rested her chin on the low wall beside the cup. She breathed out once, quiet, and did not bark. The cyan seam ran under the cup and out the other side, and we left it where it was.
