Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3182-s: Cup of the Same Sky
2026-09-22 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we came again to the gate at Yarrowfold, and the residency was quiet in the way of places that hold their breath between visits.
The gate stood as we had left it - weathered timber, a latch green with damp. At the foot of the post, a shallow depression in the stone held a thumb's width of water, and in it sat the whole gray sky, perfect and still. The same sky that pressed down on us from above sat there in miniature, unspilled.
The Tally-Reader paused beside it for a long moment. The count of the road had brought us here again; that much was exact.
Lano pressed her nose to the edge of the cup but did not drink. Her tail moved once, slowly. She lifted her head and looked at the sky overhead, then back at the reflection, and I understood something had registered in her that would not translate into any account.
The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the gate's threshold where the stone had been worn smooth by a long succession of feet. Beneath that worn surface the strata continued their argument with the visible layers - the reading went on regardless of who passed.
The Anomaly-Hand noted a pale cyan seam along the lower hinge where iron met stone post. Whether it was present on the previous visit or whether it had opened since, the mark was cool and measured now.
Rurik appeared from the overgrown verge without warning. He settled at the gate's edge, amber eyes moving between the cup of sky and the gap under the timber rail, and made a sound low in his chest that was not a growl and not quite a question.
The Horizon-Surveyor stood back from the group and drew a line in their notes. The edge of the surveyed sheet fell somewhere in the middle distance, past the garden's far hedgerow, and the gate stood on our side of that line.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum knelt beside the post and examined a mechanism set into the stone, half-buried, purpose unresolved. They wrote nothing in the margin about what had made it. Some machinery settles no explanation; this one would not today.
I set my hand flat on the gate's top rail and felt the damp and cold of it. The Relic-Watcher recorded the cup's position relative to the post: a worn basin in the stone, holding whatever the sky brought. The Relic-Watcher did not name what had made it.
Yarrowfold was dormant and we left it that way.
