Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3181-s: Stars at the Wrong Hour
2026-09-22 17:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path descended into Yarrowfold through limestone folds that caught the wind and channeled it between walls of pale grey stone the color of old ash. The approach was quiet. Not the quiet of emptiness but the quiet of a place that has been listening for a long time.
The stone trough ran the full length of the lower terrace, six paces at least, cut from a single block and worn smooth at the rim. At noon the sky above was open and bright, the sun direct overhead, and yet the water in the trough held stars. Not reflections of clouds. Stars, sharp and still, as though the trough looked through the stone to somewhere else. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at one end and traced a finger along the trough wall where a pale cyan seam ran through the block, barely visible in noon light, the color of deep water seen from far above. The Relic-Watcher made a note in the ledger and did not name what they had found.
We set the receivers on the broad flat stone beside the trough, the standard configuration. The Tally-Reader counted the placement aloud, not for ceremony but for accuracy: four positions, three bearing stakes, one aerial lead weighted with a river stone I set in place while Lano watched, her nose working at the base of the trough.
Then the first sound came through. Not static. Not silence. A pattern, low and repeating, unlike any beacon logged in the field registers. The Horizon-Surveyor looked up from the sheet and said nothing for a moment. The Bedrock-Reader moved to the receiver and adjusted the bearing twice. The pattern did not shift. The Warden of the Deep Stratum listened with both hands flat on the stone bench, then straightened without speaking.
Lano had gone still. She stood at the trough's edge with her ears flat against her skull, facing not the receiver but the fold walls to the north. Her tail was low. She barked once, sharp and short, and did not bark again, only stood rigid with her nose pointed at the stone.
Rurik had been on the far ledge. He dropped without sound to the terrace and crossed to the trough and sat at its corner, staring into the noon-lit water where the stars continued to show. His tail moved once, then stopped.
The pattern in the receiver ran on. We did not recognize its origin. The Tally-Reader opened the field count to a blank page and wrote the time. Not the signal itself - not yet - only that it had begun.
The trough held its stars. The fold held the wind. We held the not-knowing.
