Dream d3180-s: What the Iron Cannot Hold

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the fen road narrowed between two lines of standing water, and the Tally-Reader called the count at sixty-three paces before the first stone marker. Lano trotted ahead, nose low, reading the cold mud, and Rurik came behind at distance, amber eyes on the pale bands of cyan that threaded the exposed stone face to the east.

We had the account: five visits, all witnessed, all set in the column beside the earlier entries. The Relic-Watcher had traced the last of the iron armatures in the failing light, and the Horizon-Surveyor had fixed the bearing where the surveyed sheet ran out. We were carrying it forward, not pulling it back. That was the agreement.

Then the Anomaly-Hand stopped.

She was holding the relay unit - the salvaged component we had used on three previous residencies to amplify the emission readings from the seams. It had seemed reliable. It was not. A thin thread of smoke rose from the housing, acrid and fast, and before she could set it down the display glass went dark. The cyan readings vanished from the gauge. Everything the seam had been yielding went unrecorded in that moment.

Lano's ears went flat against her skull. She stood at the road's edge, very still, watching the smoke, then gave one short sharp bark and pressed against my leg.

Rurik sat down at the margin of the standing water and stared at the ruined device with unblinking amber eyes.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum knelt and opened the housing. The inner coil had burned through. The replacement coil was not in any kit we carried, and the nearest supply cache was a day's road north. Without the relay, the seam readings from this section of Fennmoss could not be amplified. Whatever the stone had been yielding, the column in the record would hold only what we had taken before the failure.

The Anomaly-Hand marked the gauge position and the time. The Bedrock-Reader noted the failure in the margin of the day's account: component lost, seam measurement suspended, improvisation required. Nothing was concluded. The system the relay had supported was dark, and none of us named yet what could be fashioned to carry its work.

We walked on. The count continued. The fen road held its shape in the fading afternoon, and Lano moved between us, ears still low, nose working the cold air for whatever trace of smoke still traveled out of the stone.
