Dream d3185-s: Cup and Cold Sky

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of standing water reached me before the margin came into sight - clay and reed-rot, carried on no wind. I followed it through the sedge until my boots found the soft ground.

The cup sat on the flat stone where the Tally-Reader had placed it at the second watch. It had not been disturbed. A grey film lay on the surface - not quite frost, not quite condensation - and the Horizon-Surveyor crouched at its edge watching the way a person watches ice before trusting it.

The Relic-Watcher stood apart. She had been there before I arrived, head tilted back, eyes moving in small arcs across the sky. I could not find what she was reading in it. The sky gave nothing I could name - grey over grey, the horizon unbroken. But her gaze moved with the care of measurement.

Lano had come through the sedge behind me. She sat at the stone's edge and watched the cup. Her nose worked twice, then held still.

Rurik had found the high bank. He sat where the cut earth showed the layered strata - brown and pale grey, and beneath them the cyan seam the Anomaly-Hand had traced at the last watch. He looked east, not at the cup.

The Anomaly-Hand drew one fingertip along where the seam surfaced at the stone's base. The pale light ran the length of the line. She said nothing. The Warden of the Deep Stratum opened the log, wrote, and closed it again.

The Bedrock-Reader read the cut bank without commentary. She moved her eyes across the exposed layers from bottom to top, then top to bottom, the way a person revisits a sentence they do not yet own.

When the Relic-Watcher lowered her gaze at last, she said: the pattern holds.

No one asked which one. The Tally-Reader set a mark in the column and did not round it.

The film on the cup had thinned to a ring at the rim. The Horizon-Surveyor stood and looked past us to where the survey sheet ended and the unmarked reed-bed continued. Lano watched the thinning ring a moment longer, then sat back. Rurik blinked once, slowly, and returned his gaze to the east.

The account would keep beside the earlier one. The allotted visits stayed ahead.
