Dream d3099-s: The Gauge Beside the Ledger

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Tally-Reader spread three books across the harbormaster table and wrote the final count by lamplight. Sixty entries. Eight unreckoned places, each marked with a ruled gap rather than a name. The books lay open and Lano circled the table once, then sat with her ears flat against her skull, watching the far door.

The Horizon-Surveyor came in from the harbor road with his measurement chain coiled over one arm. He did not speak immediately. He set the chain down and stood at the table edge until the Tally-Reader looked up.

The generator shed, he said. The reserve drum is reading low. Scrape bottom by morning if the night runs long.

The Tally-Reader set down the pen. The Relic-Watcher, who had been standing at the window with a ledger of his own, turned from the glass.

What is left in salvage?

The Horizon-Surveyor opened his hands. The last casing run came back half-weight. The far-range shed is empty. Anything further means ranging past the surveyed sheet.

Rurik came through the gap under the side door and walked the length of the table without touching any of the books. He settled at the far end, amber eyes moving to each person in the room in turn.

The Tally-Reader finished the entry he had started. The pen scratched sixty into the column and stopped.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum said nothing yet. She had a small hand compass on her side of the table and was looking at it, not at the Horizon-Surveyor. The Bedrock-Reader had his back to the wall with his arms folded.

The Anomaly-Hand spoke last: the pale seams in the cold stone we mapped this week run toward the outer ridge. There may be casings cached at the old ironworks. We saw the armature lines but did not clear them.

No one recorded this as a fact. It was offered as a direction only.

Lano got up from her place by the door and moved to the center of the room, where the lamplight was brightest. She stood still, tail low, and gave one short bark that dropped to silence before anyone answered it.

The gauge beside the ledger read what it read. The eight unreckoned places waited in the books with their ruled gaps. No one called the count complete.
