Dream d3100-s: Eight Places Before the Light Holds

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road left Tamarackwharf before the harbor lights had gone cold, and the Tally-Reader walked first, the ledger open against one arm, marking nothing yet. Lano trotted at the edge of the cobblestones where the salt grass began, nose low, catching something from the seam in the rock below the road's foundation.

The Bedrock-Reader stopped at that seam. It ran south to north across the road surface, older than the road itself, older than the wharfside pilings. She said nothing. She crouched and pressed two fingers to the stone and after a moment stood again, and the Tally-Reader made a mark.

One.

The Horizon-Surveyor had walked ahead. She stood at a rise where the coast road bent inland, measuring the line where the surveyed sheet ended. Behind her the wharf's lanterns were still visible; ahead, nothing on any record. The unreckoned stratum began at her feet.

The Relic-Watcher found the first monolith before any light reached it - she recorded it by touch, moving her hands across the surface without speaking, and the Warden of the Deep Stratum copied the description without adding to it. An iron armature rose from the ground beside it, its purpose settled nowhere in the ledger. The Tally-Reader marked two entries. The monolith. The armature. Separate.

Three. Four.

Rurik had gone ahead at the inland fork without being directed. He sat at the threshold of a cold ruin, amber eyes steady, and did not move when we passed single file around him. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the ruin's inner corner where a pale cyan seam ran up the wall - not quite stone, not quite the iron of the armatures. She marked the position and the color and no other quality. Rurik blinked once, slow, and rose.

Five.

The light came then, low and flat from the sea-side, reaching the road without warmth. Two more unreckoned places appeared in that first hour: a flooded cutting in the rock where something circular had been fitted and removed long ago, and a stand of ironwork that the Relic-Watcher recorded as four upright members, cross-braced, with nothing above. No roof, no platform, no evident history.

Six. Seven.

Lano sat down in the road at the base of the last descent before the surveyed sheet resumed. She had something in her mouth - a flat grey stone, smaller than her jaw, carried from near the seam. I took it from her and set it at the road's edge. The Bedrock-Reader glanced at it. The Tally-Reader did not record the stone but recorded the location.

Eight places. The Tally-Reader read back each entry once, without comment or ordering, then closed the ledger.

The surveyed sheet began again. Lano - she exhaled, soft: "ocho."
