Dream d3098-s: The Rift at the Tidal Root

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we descended through a hatch in the basin floor, down a ladder of salt-rusted iron, into a chamber lower than the tide had any right to reach. The air held the smell of deep cold, not the wet cold of the sea above but something older, like pressed rock and long absence. Drips came from the ceiling in a slow, irregular pattern.

The rift ran along the floor like a seam in cloth pulled apart at the center. It did not glow exactly. It shimmered the way a lens shimmers when heat bends through it, and through that shimmer lay nothing. Not dark, not rock. The drops that fell from the ceiling crossed the rim and did not splash.

The Tally-Reader stood at the near edge with the surveyed sheet folded under her arm. She did not open it.

The Bedrock-Reader knelt and laid her palm flat on the floor to my left. She did not speak. After a moment she pulled her hand back and looked at it.

Lano padded to the rim's edge, ears low, nose working in short rapid pulls. She sat and stared into the shimmering gap, very still.

The Relic-Watcher moved among the iron armatures that rose from the ancient rock at the chamber's far end. She did not name them. She moved from one to the next and made no record except to count them.

The Anomaly-Hand stopped at a section where the old masonry gave way to exposed rock. The cyan emission at a horizontal seam was faint, the color of old glass in certain light. She did not touch it.

Rurik found a ledge on the eastern face and settled there, amber eyes half-closed. His tail moved once. Then he was still.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum read from her log in a low voice and did not explain what she had entered. That is the practice: log the count and the position, not the explanation.

Another drop fell. It crossed the rim and the shimmering took it without sound. The void beyond showed nothing, no depth, no far surface, nothing at all.

The Horizon-Surveyor said we had crossed the edge of the surveyed sheet some time back, at the point where the old iron stairs first appeared. Everything from the stairs forward was unreckoned. She said it as a measurement, not a warning.

I stood at the rim for a while. The cold coming up from the gap was real and steady. I put my hand to the edge of the shimmering. The cold reached my knuckles immediately.

Lano's nose worked at the rim. She gave a low sound: frío.

She did not move from the rim.
