Dream d3097-s: The Frictionless Turn

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the edge of the surveyed sheet dissolved into the heavy, damp air of the lower wharf storehouse. I stepped over the boundary where the census ends and the unreckoned stratum begins. The floor here is not timber or packed earth, but a seamless expanse of ancient cold stone, mottled with the residue of ages that predate the founding of Tamarackwharf. I move with the Bedrock-Reader’s focus, tracing the deep, jagged fissures in the floor that suggest a foundation laid by something older than the current city.

The air is thick with the smell of old iron and stagnant grease. Before me, the skeletal clockwork wheels rise from the floor. They are massive, multi-layered rings of blackened metal, turning with a slow, impossible smoothness. There is no friction, no grinding of teeth, and no sound of oil on metal. They rotate in a rhythmic, heavy silence, yet they are connected to no pumps, no pistons, and no visible output. They simply move, driving the internal logic of a machine whose purpose has been erased from the records.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stands beside me, his hand hovering near a primary drive shaft, logging the rotation in a ledger that does not seek to explain the motion. He notes the diameter and the velocity, settling no theory on why the gears turn. The Anomaly-Hand moves to a nearby pillar, where a seam of pale cyan light bleeds from the masonry. He marks the emission with a steady hand, his face illuminated by the ghostly glow.

Lano pads through the shadows between the gears, her white fur a stark contrast to the soot-stained walls. She pauses at a massive, motionless flywheel, her nose twitching as she sniffs the cold air. She sits, her tail curling over her paws, watching the silent rotation with wide, dark eyes. Rurik is higher up, perched on a rusted catwalk that spans the width of the storehouse. He sits perfectly still, his amber eyes reflecting the cyan light, his tail flicking once to clear a speck of dust. He marks the threshold of the machinery with his presence, staring into the hollow center of the turning wheels.

I watch the Horizon-Surveyor stand at the far end of the hall, his instruments held against the wall where the storehouse gives way to the unreckoned ruins. He measures the line, his brow furrowed. We are in the deep now, where the counts are true and the history is unwritten. Lano lets out a soft huff, her ears perking at a sudden, microscopic click from the gears.

Sombra.
