Dream d3061-s: The Geometry Before Names

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I sat at the stone ledge in Harrowhush on the sixth night and copied diagrams by lamplight. The lamp was small, its flame steady in the still air of the vacuum chamber. I had a sheet of paper and a straight-edged rule, and I worked slowly, tracing the frame dimensions from the incisions in the stone wall where someone had cut them, years or centuries before I arrived.

The numbers were clear: interior span, wall thickness, corner radius, depth from the upper ledge to the floor plate. I wrote them in the order I found them, without rearranging, without guessing what the frame was meant to contain. The Horizon-Surveyor stood at the far end of the ledge checking proportions against a hand-count of paces. The Relic-Watcher noted the incision depth with a thumbnail pressed flat to the stone.

Lano sat beside me on the bench, chin on her forepaws, watching the lamplight move across the paper. When I shifted the rule she lifted her head, then settled again. Rurik had found the high shelf above the reading bench and lay along its length, tail dropping over the lip, amber eyes half-closed.

The Bedrock-Reader returned from the lower corridor and reported two more frames cut into the bedrock there, same geometry, same order of dimensions. I added the count to the margin of my sheet: three total. Whether that number meant something I did not know, and I did not write speculation into the margin.

The cold in the chamber was steady, not deepening. The Anomaly-Hand marked a pale cyan seam along the base of the far wall, a thin line, even, with no branching. I noted its position relative to the corner angles. The Tally-Reader wrote down the road length to this chamber from the surveyed sheet boundary: four hundred and twelve paces, not four hundred, not half a mile.

I finished the last dimension and blew the ink dry. Lano's nose twitched once toward the stone dust on my sleeve.
