Dream d3060-s: Glass Sphere, Absolute Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the gallery held its breath.

The miniature singularity hung inside its vacuum sphere at the center of the room, a point of total darkness ringed by a pale loop of photon light. No sound came from it. No warmth. The glass did not vibrate. The thing simply was, enclosed and still, and we stood at the edge of the amber lamplight and looked at it.

Lano sat at my heel, nose tilted toward the sphere. Her ears stayed forward. She did not approach.

The Bedrock-Reader crouched low to read the floor beneath the display stand, tracing the older stone underneath the laid tile. The gallery floor here was not one material: carved bedrock ran beneath the newer course, and the seam between them was irregular, unhurried, the work of different centuries.

The Relic-Watcher recorded the iron armatures along the far wall without naming what they had once suspended. The hooks remained. The ceilings were high enough that whatever had hung there was gone without leaving scale.

Rurik slipped ahead of us all through a gap in the display rail and took his position on the low ledge nearest the sphere. He sat perfectly still, amber eyes on the dark point, tail wrapped close. He did not blink for a long while.

The Horizon-Surveyor stood at the gallery's far arch and consulted the sheet. Past this room the surveyed edge ended. What lay beyond the arch was not entered by walking, not marked by the old census takers, not folded into any figure we carried.

The Tally-Reader stood to my left and said nothing. The count was 128. It did not become 129 in this room.

The Anomaly-Hand pointed to the base of the sphere's mount where a faint cyan emission leaked from the stone itself, not from the sphere, not from the ring. A property of the older bedrock below. The Warden of the Deep Stratum noted it and settled no explanation.

I placed my hand against the glass.

The sphere was room temperature. The dark inside gave nothing back.

Lano padded one step closer, sniffed the base of the stand, then sat again.

The pale photon ring continued its slow, patient orbit.
