Dream d3059-s: What the Cables Carry

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we descended through a low passage carved in cold bedrock and emerged into a vault so dry the air tasted of nothing at all.

The chamber was wide. The ceiling had been dressed smooth by hand, long before any of us. At the center, suspended on four heavy tension cables anchored to stone bolts above and below, hung a vessel of iron framing and thick glass: a vacuum containment chamber, older than the survey sheet, older perhaps than the settlements that recorded its location incorrectly.

The cables held it a foot above the floor. It did not swing.

Lano padded ahead of me and stopped at the edge of the cable shadow. Her nose worked the air steadily. There was nothing to smell - that, too, was information.

The Tally-Reader stood with her ledger open and did not write. She read what was already on the page, then looked up at the vessel, then back at the page. The count did not agree with what stood before her. She noted the discrepancy without resolving it.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum circled the chamber once, keeping a measured distance from the cables. He carried no lamp. The vault held its own pale ambient light from no visible source - the Anomaly-Hand crouched at the north wall and ran a finger along a faint cyan line in the stone, a hairline emission that followed no natural fault.

The Bedrock-Reader pressed her palm flat to the floor. The Relic-Watcher stood back and recorded the iron framing's joinery style in his notebook without classifying it.

Rurik slipped past me and leapt to the low stone shelf along the east wall, landing without a sound. He sat there and watched the vessel. His tail moved once, then was still.

The Horizon-Surveyor stood at the vault's far opening, where the passage continued into unmapped dark. She did not go further. She marked on her sheet the place where the surveyed edge ended and the unreckoned stratum began. The line fell precisely at the cable nearest the opening.

I set my hand on the cool tension cable. It was taut as a low note held past its resolution. The vacuum inside the vessel held nothing. The cables held the vessel. The stone held the cables. Below the stone, the Bedrock-Reader said quietly, was older stone still, unlogged and without a number.

The Tally-Reader closed her ledger. The cyan line pulsed once, slowly, and did not repeat.

Lano sat down beside the cable shadow and watched the vessel with me. We stayed there a long time, in the dry silence, counting nothing.

Note

A vacuum vessel hangs suspended by taut cables in a silent, ancient vault. The atmosphere vibrates with the heavy weight of the unrecorded and the profound ache of the uncounted.
