Dream d3062-s: Cold Reeds, Unreckoned Shore

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the party rested on the sunken terrace at Harrowhush as the light left the sky in long pale bands. The stone bench was cold through my coat. Below us, the reed beds stretched in every direction without a clear end, and the water between the stalks held the last color of the day like a thin mirror.

The Horizon-Surveyor set the rolled sheet against the wall and said the surveyed portion ended at the reed line to the northwest. Beyond that, nothing counted. I looked and could not tell where the sheet's edge corresponded to anything in the actual marsh. The reed beds did not mark the boundary. Only the paper did.

Lano had gone to the very edge of the terrace and stood with her nose out over the drop, ears forward, reading something in the cold air that none of us could. After a moment she padded back and curled against the base of the wall.

The Relic-Watcher had her notebook open but was not writing. She said there was an armature standing in the reeds about four hundred meters out, visible only because it caught the last light on its upper strut. No one had logged it. It had no number. She did not name it.

The Bedrock-Reader crouched and pressed a palm to the terrace stone. She said the foundation course here was older than any settlement record held - not by estimation, but because the cut style was a type she had seen only in the unreckoned stratum. Whatever Harrowhush was built on had not been built for Harrowhush.

Rurik had gone to the far corner of the terrace, where a low gap in the parapet led onto a narrow ledge above the reeds. He sat in it and stared out. His tail moved once, then was still.

The Anomaly-Hand came back from the northern wall and showed us a seam in the stone: pale cyan, faint, running diagonally from knee height to above the lintel. It did not glow. It did not pulse. It was a color in the rock that had no explanation in any survey we carried. She had measured its length with a cord and marked the cord with ink. That was the record.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum was the last to sit. He said he had found a mechanism beneath the lower step - a horizontal drum of corroded iron with a slot in the top, full of standing water - and that he did not know what it was for and would not guess. He had noted its dimensions and described its position relative to the terrace corner. He set the paper on the bench beside mine.

The Tally-Reader said that before the light failed she had recounted the road: one hundred and twenty-seven surveyed places, fifty-two entered by foot, seventy-five still out ahead. She did not add what might lie beyond the sheet.

We sat with that number for a while. The reed beds darkened into the marsh, and the armature the Relic-Watcher had seen caught the last thread of light on its strut, then lost it. Lano huffed once - quiet, like punctuation - and tucked her nose under her tail.

The pale cyan seam in the wall stayed the color it was.
