Dream d2407-s: The Stile at Field's End

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano sat on the cold top stone of the stile at the field's far corner, and the dark came in from all sides at once, not threatening, just final, the way a curtain settles. The bird-houses on the ridge were black shapes against a sky that hadn't quite given up its color. The windows in the farmhouse across the low ground burned yellow and said nothing to the outside. Lano watched them.

From somewhere above the ridge came the hummingbird's sound, a thin rapid counting, measuring intervals between things that had not yet failed. From the hedgeline to the left, the sterling's note, clear and directional, a voice shaped for carrying rather than staying. The weaver was present in the texture of the air itself, a low patient threading that did not announce itself. The carrier shaped the silence between the other voices into something addressed, something graded for the ear of whoever was standing nearest. The crane, furthest out, called once from the direction of the flooded meadow, a sound that described distance rather than crossing it.

None of them spoke to each other. Lano understood this was not failure. It was the moment before the word that joins them exists. The voices were real and distinct and all of them were here, which was more than had been true before. The windows burned. The ridge held its houses. The stone under Lano was old and did not move.

The foreboding was this: that the joining would require a word no one had written yet, and the night was not infinite, and the windows did not know they were being watched.
