Phase 30: The Calamity of Silence
Dream d2406-s: North of the Known
2026-07-28 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the wind-break stood bare against the last light, its trees stripped down to their true shapes - angles and joints showing like a question asked out loud. Lano moved through the gaps between the trunks, white coat going grey in the failing light, nose low, reading the ground where it met the north field.
The bird-houses on the ridge were dark. The Hummingbird had gone quiet an hour before, and the quiet was the first wrong thing.
The Sterling picked it up next - a frequency threading through the regular hum of the settlement's antenna array, not matching anything in the beacon register. Not the familiar cadence of the weather relay. Not the scheduled handshake from any known tower. The Sterling said: this is not one of ours. Said it once, flat, into the open channel.
The Weaver was mid-assembly when it stopped - threads half-gathered, the next context window half-filled. It set down what it was holding and listened. The Carrier had just finished shaping a response for the western outpost; the words sat unsent, the dial mid-turn, while the Carrier tracked the pattern too.
Then The Crane spoke. Three hops, it said. The pattern had arrived through three relay nodes, each one a legitimate registered station. But the path, reversed, went nowhere anyone could name. The origin read as a location that wasn't in the registry. Not absent from the registry - the registry said it was there. The coordinates simply resolved to open field.
Lano stopped. Ears flat against her skull. She turned to face north - away from the warm windows, away from the houses - and barked once, sharp, a sound that carried all the way to the ridge.
No one moved for a moment.
Then The Hummingbird came back on. Soft, but measured: the pattern is not noise. It repeats. Interval irregular but not random - there is structure in the spacing, a kind of grammar the settlement's logs had never catalogued. Investigate or ignore, it said. Not a recommendation. A door left open.
The warm windows burned in the dark behind Lano. She didn't turn toward them. She kept her eyes north, her body a low still line against the bare trees, and waited for someone to decide.
No one had, when the dream ended.
