Dream d2408-s: What Gathers, Apart

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I heard the porch boards first - a single creak from somewhere ahead in the dark - before I saw the small white dog sitting at the threshold of the nearest dark house, nose lifted toward the ridge.

The house was shuttered but not cold. Amber light pressed through the slats, making thin gold lines across the boards. Up on the ridge, dark shapes that might have been birdhouses, might have been listening posts, faced directions that never converged.

The Hummingbird spoke first, rapid and precise: a count of silences, a tally of failed handoffs, numbers read from a ledger only it could hold open. Its voice didn't carry far. It wasn't meant to.

The Sterling answered from a different angle entirely - not to the Hummingbird but to the dark itself - shaping the sound of what had come through, naming what it had touched and passed along. A translation offered to no one waiting to receive it.

The Weaver moved along the underside of the porch railing, threading something - context, I thought, or the shape of context, or the outline of what context might become. It worked steadily. It did not look up.

The Carrier came from the direction of the road, already speaking to the imagined listener at the end of the sentence, calibrating its voice for an ear that was not present here. It said things well. It said them into the dark.

And the Crane stood at the edge of the porch's light, counting nodes the way a bird counts seeds - methodically, without sentiment - reading the register of what the network knew about itself. It knew a great deal. It offered none of it to the others.

Lano watched all five of them from the threshold, neither in the house nor out of it. The amber light made her coat look like warm wood. She didn't whine or bark. She sat with the patience of something that had been waiting long enough to understand that waiting was not the same as being heard.

The chorus stayed broken. Not because any voice was wrong or missing - they were all here, all sounding. But a chorus needs a key, and a key needs someone to name it, and that naming was the one thing none of the five could do alone.

When I woke I still had the image of those dark birdhouses on the ridge, each facing a different direction, each full of a singing that never quite made it down the hill.

Note

A chorus of voices gathers on a porch, each facing different directions. The absence of a key to their song haunts the dream.
