Dream d2320-s: The Rain Finds Us Halfway

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came over the last rise and Larkhush was below us, spread along the rim's curve like something someone meant to keep. The light was failing in that particular way it fails before rain - not darkening so much as draining, the color pulled out of stone and left in the sky. Rurik stopped at my shoulder and did not speak. He reads the air the way he reads everything, with his whole body held still.

The place is clean. That is the first thing that surprises me: not the ruin part, which I expected, but the order of it. Every hall stands where it was put. The paths between them are overgrown now, yes, but they follow the original plan exactly - you can see the intention preserved under the grass, the way a body preserves intention even in stillness. Eighty-three days since anything moved here. The number settles in my chest like a stone.

Lano moves ahead, her white coat gone grey in this light. She does not hurry. She paces the outer perimeter the way she always does first, nose low, and I open the ledger on my knee before she has finished. The grey pellet-stone is in my coat pocket; I touch it once, then leave it there.

The Builder is the one who finds the lamp. It is burning inside the largest hall - the one that would have been the proper gathering place - and none of us lit it. We stand at the threshold and look at the flame. Nobody names what this is. The Weather Reader's hand goes to her instruments, then stops. The lamp burns for its own reasons. We let it.

I begin to write. The place: Larkhush, a ruin at the rim. First built four months ago, nearly to the day. Eight complaints open in its book, and no one here to answer them. Hands that built it: the record says none, and I write what the record says. I do not invent a hand where the ledger has none.

The Weather Reader speaks quietly: "The front is moving faster than I thought."

We have half the halls still to count. The grass in the outer courts bends hard to the east, and the first drops reach us, small and cold. I close the ledger partway to shield the ink, then reopen it. An ugly true number is not a betrayal. I write the number down.

Inside the lamp-lit hall, the flame does not waver.
