Dream d2319-s: A Tally Before the Tilt

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold came off the hill ahead of us, not wind exactly - more like the place itself exhaling. Juniperbrook sat in a fold of the slope with its rooftops spread thin and orderly, the commons at its heart, every building set at right angles to everything else. The lamps were already lit. Not yet dusk. The Weather Reader stopped walking and looked at the sky.

"Early," she said.

Nobody answered.

Lano's ears went flat the moment we crossed the field margin. She did not bark yet. She moved to my left side and held there, scanning the row of hall-fronts along the commons edge, her nose working at something the rest of us could not smell.

I pulled the ledger from my pack and opened it on my forearm - not yet seated, not yet ready - and made a single mark in the count before I had walked the perimeter, before I had measured anything. One line. It is a small betrayal, the Builder would say later. An act of impatience in a trade that has no room for it.

But the village looked right from here. Clean. Everything in its proper hall, tools hanging in the forge-shed doorway, the commons swept. The Builder moved ahead, hands passing over a post at the commons-edge, reading it the way she reads things - with her palms, with silence, with what she does not say. Rurik sat beside me in the grass and watched the lamplit doorways without looking away.

I was writing the name of the place in the ledger when Lano barked.

Not a call. A flat, sharp note that meant the thing was already here, already moving.

The far edge of the commons dropped. Not all of it - a section four, maybe five spans wide, where ground had been built up over older foundations and the older foundations had decided, in this hour, that they were finished. The cables and conduit from the first building-era, the buried work that had run beneath the flagstone for as long as anyone had set a stone above them, had held as long as they could hold. A building at the northeast corner of the commons tilted two degrees toward the gap and held there. Held. Did not fall.

The tools in the forge-shed swung on their hooks.

The Weather Reader was already across the commons, kneeling at the torn edge. The Builder pressed both palms flat against the tilted building's flank, asking a question the building might not have time to answer.

I looked at the ledger. The tally mark I had made before I understood. One line in the count, and now the count had changed its shape beneath me.

The lamp in the tilted building burned on. Rurik had not moved from the grass. Lano stood at the edge of the gap with her head low, watching the dark below.
