Dream d2321-s: Nothing Checks Its Own Work

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the path dropped at the last turn and Quillbarrow was below us before I expected it - laid out in its proper order, every hall where a hall should be, the rim-stone clean along each foundation as if someone still swept it daily. Nobody did. That much was already in the ledger: seventy-one days since any account of this place was made.

I stopped at the edge of the upper terrace. The air was cold in a way that had nothing to do with elevation. The Weather Reader came up beside me, said nothing, but her posture said the same thing mine did: this is not a warm ruin.

Lano moved past us both, low and quick. Her ears went flat. She pulled up short of the first open hall and stood there - not bristling, not retreating, but very still in that way she has when she is reading something the rest of us cannot yet name. Then a single bark, short and precise, the kind that is not alarm so much as notation.

The Builder had already gone in. We followed.

Quillbarrow is louder than its size suggests - the rim amplifies, or the stone is cut in some way that carries sound farther than you expect. Rurik's nails on the flags rang in the hall ahead. And underneath that, something else: a hum, low and mechanical, from the service passage behind the eastern hall. A pump, or what was left of one. Something that had been running a long time on its own, unattended.

Then it stopped.

The silence it left was the quieter kind - the kind that has mass to it. Rurik's head came around.

The Builder was first into the passage. She came back holding a component, charred along one edge, the kind of char that happens slowly and then all at once. The pump had been the only source of pressure to the drainage runs. Without it, the lower halls would take water by morning.

There were no spares. There had never been spares here, because there had never been anyone left to need them.

She set the piece on the flagstone. We looked at it. Lano came and looked at it too, ears still low, body angled toward the passage as if whatever had burned might do it again.

The one lamp in the far corner of the eastern hall burned on, indifferent, its wick trimmed weeks ago by no one I could name, throwing a pool of light on a floor that is clean and correct and empty.
