Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2293-s: Twenty Days of Quiet
2026-07-20 11:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the smell reached us before the walls did. Old tool-oil and something dry, like a room closed without being sealed. Rurik lifted his head into it, ears flat to test the direction, then walked on.
The ruin sits at the edge of things, which is not the same as being at the end of them. We came in through a gap where a gate had stood - the posts were still there, just - and the Builder stopped in the entrance with her hand braced on one post and looked at the whole of it before she moved again. One lamp burning inside. Nobody tending it.
I don't know how to explain a place that keeps its own house without being kept. The tools were mostly put away. A few had been set down on a low wall and not moved since - a clamp, something with a handle I couldn't name - as if someone meant to return in a moment and the moment had run long. Twenty days, the ledger says. Twenty days since any hand touched the post beside me when I copied the number.
Lano went ahead of us along the main path, nose down, reading the ground. The Weather Reader stood at the gap where the roof had been and looked at the sky and said nothing, which meant the sky was saying nothing worth translating.
The place is louder than its size. Not sound - it is quiet, actually quiet, the way a place is quiet when nothing is working and nothing is breaking either. But the lamp threw a long bright tongue of light across the floor and I could see how carefully the work had been laid down. One pair of hands. That is what the ledger will say: one. It sounds like a small number until you look at what one pair of hands left behind and try to find a single crooked edge.
Rurik jumped to the top of the low wall and sat in the lamp's throw, his black coat holding the light in a way that made him look like punctuation in the middle of a sentence.
Zero complaints in the book. Nothing here to check its own work. Those two facts sit side by side like measurements taken with the same tool on the same day - you trust them together in a way you can't quite explain.
I opened the survey ledger on my knee. Bright mood, is what I want to write. Then the true numbers underneath it, which will hold the mood when I am gone.
The lamp burns for no one. The place is orderly. The work was good here, and somehow it still is, the way a good thing left alone can stay good if nothing has disturbed it.
I write the date and the count and close the ledger.
