Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2294-s: Lamps Already Burning
2026-07-20 13:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road into Slatefold curved past a low stone wall and leveled, and the commons opened ahead of us like a breath being held.
Clean - that was the first word, and almost right. More than clean: arranged. The paths ran straight between the halls. The commons grass stood at a sensible height. The well-mouth was capped with a cover someone had measured twice before cutting. Everything in its place, the kind of order that comes from two pairs of careful hands working a long time with no argument between them.
Lano moved beside me through the gate, her ears rotating once, then settling flat. Not alarm - something more deliberate than alarm. The Weather Reader stopped at the edge of the commons and stood still for a moment too long, reading something in the air I couldn't calibrate.
The tools were still out. A trestle stood in the middle of the work yard with a straightedge across it like someone had just stepped inside. The clay on the bench had not dried. Six days since any mark of life here, and the clay was still soft in that way it only stays soft when someone has been careful about the air around it.
Rurik went ahead without being asked, picking his way along the edge of the commons between the flagstones with the unhurried deliberateness of a cat who has decided something but will not say what. He did not circle back.
The Builder stood at the trestle. She did not touch the straightedge. She looked at the angle it rested at the way you look at a sentence you're not sure has finished.
I unstrapped the pack and got the survey ledger out onto my knee. The Book of Readings sat heavy at the bottom of the pack, and below it the grey pellet-stone, smooth and cold through the cloth. I found the right page and wrote the name, the commons, the condition - clean, well-laid, everything in its hall. No complaints open against it. Not one. I wrote that down beside the warmth of the clay and the six-day silence, then counted the rooftops again to make it certain.
Three pages back, something caught my eye. A column entry I had marked as four when the line above said three. Small thing - one mark off, one place back - but I crossed it and rewrote it, and the correction sat in the margin, honest and unremarkable.
The lamps in the halls were already burning. Not yet dusk. The light across the commons was cold, the kind that arrives before the named thing, and nobody had named it. Rurik was sitting on the far edge of the commons now, watching the hall doors, his tail making small careful arcs across the stone.
