Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2292-s: The Cord Across the Commons
2026-07-20 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path dropped and I was already inside the village before I noticed the gate had no latch - just a post and a wire loop, easy to lift, meant to be lifted. The commons opened ahead of me: a wide green with the halls arranged around it in careful order, each roof where it should be, each path worn to the same depth. I could feel the rightness of the layout before I could say why. Something had thought hard about this and then built it without argument.
Rurik went ahead of me the way he does, not scouting exactly but placing himself where I would need information - at the corner of the nearest hall, then at the well, then at the edge of the commons where the grass met flagstone. He did not speak. The silence here was not the silence of absence; it was the silence of something that had reached a good stopping point two days ago and was resting in its own correctness.
Lano was beside me when I opened the ledger. She had the cord and I had the pins, and the Builder had the tally-board, and we began. The commons measured clean - no odd corners, no borrowed edge, nothing that had crept out of its lot since the original placing. I wrote it down as I walked it. The ledger was filling the way good work fills a page: not rushed, not padded, one true number after another.
The Weather Reader said nothing for the first hour. Then she turned her head - just the slight tilt that means she is reading something above the treeline - and I knew the sky was on its way to changing. I was not yet halfway around the outer edge. I made a mark in the margin so I would know where I was when the light shifted, then kept walking.
The open complaint was in the smaller hall - I had seen it noted when I checked the book before we arrived. One thing recorded, not yet answered. Nothing here checks its own work; the Builder confirmed it, tapping the tally-board once. We would note it, measure it, write its number without flinching. An ugly true number is the gift the ledger asks for.
The grey pellet-stone was in my coat pocket and I had not needed it yet. I pressed my thumb to its flat side while I counted paces - not from worry, but from method. The Book of Readings was in the pack. The ledger was open on my forearm, resting against the crook of my elbow.
I am pacing the north edge of the commons now, the cord staked behind me, the wind beginning its slow turn.
