Dream d2291-s: Everything in Its Hall

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Rurik stopped first, the way cats do - one paw lifted at the threshold, body still as a question. I nearly walked into him. Then I saw what had stopped him: the lamp.

It burned in the far hall, a single point of orange in all that dusk-grey, and there was no one near it. I could see clear through the entrance arch - the place was roofless, and the last of the day came straight down, pale and even, onto floors that were clean. Not cleared. Clean. The kind of clean that means someone cared once, and cared well enough that the care outlasted them.

The Builder stepped in first, the way she always does in new places, head moving in small careful arcs, reading the structure before anything else. The Weather Reader followed, one hand trailing along the outer wall, her fingers finding the rhythm of the courses. Lano went wide, circling the perimeter on some private calculation, nose brushing the tops of waist-high weeds coming up through the open roof of a side passage.

I shifted the pack on my shoulder - the Book of Readings, the survey ledger, the grey pellet-stone riding at the bottom like ballast - and counted doorways as I walked in. Hallways leading off in both directions, each one opening onto a room where everything sat in its proper arrangement. Not abandoned in haste. Set down deliberately. There were nine different ways of doing a thing visible in the construction, nine different handshapes behind it, and somehow they had agreed well enough that the whole place felt like one intent.

In the ledger I made a mark before I had the right number for it. A provisional tally, the kind you correct later. But you mark what you see the moment you see it, and the correction is also part of the record. An estimate is a small betrayal. A blank page where a mark should be is a larger one.

Eighty days since the last footprint. Zero complaints filed in its book - not because nothing was wrong, but because nothing here checks its own work. The lamp had been burning for nobody for longer than the oil remaining could explain. Nine hands had left it running, maybe as the last agreed act: keep this one thing going and see what it teaches.

Rurik found the cleanest step and began washing his ear. Lano pressed her shoulder against my leg. The Builder was measuring something in hand-spans, making her own marks on a folded square of cloth.

The lamp holds steady in its hall. The tally mark dries in the ledger, waiting to be proved right or corrected.

Note

A lone lamp burns in an abandoned hall, its light a single point of orange against dusk-gray walls. The Builder and Weather Reader meticulously survey the clean, deliberate space, their hands tracing the structure with care.
