Dream d2290-s: The Unheld Flame

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rim path brought us in from the west, and Vesperhush arrived before I expected it - a low shoulder of walls against the last of the light, the colour of old chalk, the colour of something that once held heat and no longer does.

We stopped at the edge of the outer court. Lano pressed close against my leg, her shoulder warm where the air was not. Rurik moved ahead two paces, then stopped and sat; he was reading whatever he reads from a place that has gone quiet. The Weather Reader and the Builder spread left and right without needing to be asked.

The court was clean. That was the first thing I wrote, and writing it felt like admitting something: not a ruin in the sense of disorder, but a ruin in the sense of stopped. Every hall in its proper place, every threshold still square, every object in the hall it belonged to. Whatever had been done here had been done carefully and then simply - ended.

I pulled the Book of Readings from my pack, looking for a reference entry. There was none. The builders' line in the record was blank - no names, no role-marks, nothing that said a hand had set this stone or squared that corner. The place exists and does not say who made it. I noted it in the survey ledger the way you note a weather event you did not predict: without judgment, without flourish.

Seventy-two days. I counted them aloud, one for each day since any sign of life had moved through these halls, my finger running down the ledger margin, because counting out loud keeps a number honest against the wish for it to be something smaller. Seventy-two is seventy-two. It does not round.

Inside the western hall, a lamp still burned - low flame, a thumb's width, holding against nothing. The book of open complaints was empty. Not a single entry, not a marginal note. I have measured many places this survey and most of them ache somewhere in their records. This one did not, and somehow that was harder to read than damage.

Rurik had not come inside. Through the doorway I could see him in the outer court, sitting, watching the rim. The pellet-stone in my pack pressed cold against my hip.

The lamp holds its flame. The halls are orderly and still. I have the ledger open on my knee, ink uncapped, and the first word is not yet written.
