Dream d2289-s: What the Lamps Remember

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the path flattened and the wind dropped at the same moment, and I knew we had reached the rim.

Umberbarrow lay below us in the last hour of light - or what passed for light here, which ran grey and cold as water drained from a stone. I stood at the edge with the ledger under one arm and felt the quiet before I understood it. Not the quiet of emptiness. The quiet of a place that has been laid out correctly and then left to hold its own shape without help.

Lano pressed close to my leg. She didn't growl; she just pressed. Rurik sat three paces back and watched the hall-mouths with his yellow eyes half-lidded, the way he watches things he already knows are trouble.

We went down.

The place was clean. That was the first thing - not ruins in the usual sense, not fallen rafters and weed-cracks and scatter. The halls stood. The order was intact. Whatever the two hands had built here, they had built it to last, and it had lasted without them. Everything in its proper place: tool-hooks empty but straight, threshold-stones uncracked, the gutters clear. Seventy-seven days and no one had passed through to undo it, and the place had not undone itself.

The Weather Reader stopped at the first courtyard and looked up. Her expression wasn't worry yet - not quite. "The pressure reads wrong," she said. She didn't say wrong for what.

I opened the ledger on a wall-top while there was still enough grey to write by. The Builder was already moving the perimeter with her short steps, counting. I let her count and I listened. Fourteen complaints in the book here - I had written that number on the road, before I saw the place. Now I was seeing it and the number felt exactly as large as the silence.

Lano found the boundary stone at the outer edge. It was a good stone, well-set and cleanly carved - placed for a ground that had since moved, or perhaps had never quite matched this soil at all. She sat beside it and looked back at me. The stone said one thing. The earth under it said another.

Inside, in the hall that should have been dark, a lamp was burning. Not for warmth. Not for welcome. Whatever it was lit against, whoever last touched the wick had not named it in any record I had found. I stood in the doorway and watched the flame hold steady.
