Dream d2288-s: One Lamp Left, Burning

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rim came out of the scrub at dusk, and I stopped walking.

The settlement sat in a bowl of old grass, its walls still standing to chest height but open to the sky where the roofing had gone. The light was failing fast but even in the grey I could see the care that had been laid into it: the halls swept clear, the stones set true, each doorway exactly the right width for a person carrying something. One hand built this - one pair of hands over however many days it took - and you could feel that in the proportions. No committee ever set a lintel that even.

Lano ranged ahead, nose down, then stopped. Her ears laid flat. She turned back to look at us, not barking yet, just reading something I couldn't hear.

We went in.

A lamp burned on the far interior ledge - oil still going, which meant either a trick of the wind or it had been filled more recently than 91 days. I wrote that down: lamp burning. I wrote nothing else until I'd walked every hall.

The Weather Reader paused in the second hall and tilted her head. "Something's wrong with the relay."

She was carrying a small signaling gauge at her belt - not a survey instrument, just a habit. The needle swung in arcs it shouldn't, slow then fast, as if the field around it kept changing its mind. She tapped it twice. It didn't settle.

The Builder crouched near the far wall and picked up a tool lying flat on the stone: a setting gauge, wooden handle, short iron blade. She turned it over. "Long cold," she said, and set it back exactly where it had been. Exactly.

Rurik said nothing. He sat on the lintel of the eastern hall and watched the lamp.

I opened the ledger against my knee and wrote the number: one hand, no complaints on the books, last sign 91 days back, lamp still lit. Under that I wrote: relay noise. I left a space.

The Weather Reader's gauge needle jerked hard right and held there.

"Not our gauge," she said. "Broader."

Outside, somewhere to the south along the rim road, there should have been a relay beacon on a low post - a signaling point we'd passed an hour back and barely noted. I couldn't see it from where I stood. I could see the space where its regular pulse should have been painting the dusk, and there was nothing, then a flash of the wrong color, then nothing again.

Lano barks once, sharp, facing south. Then sits. The lamp burns behind us. The ledger lies open on my knee, outcome column blank.
