Dream d2287-s: Three Pages Back

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where a chisel lies in the grass, handle still pointing toward the last thing it worked on. I step over it to reach the staked line, pull the cord taut, and read yesterday's mark against this morning's eye. The hamlet has that quality of recent pause - hearths still breathing, a few shutters left unlatched, nothing rotted, only set down mid-task and not returned to. Six days is not long enough to change the air.

The Builder stands near the northern edge, tallying the roof-lines visible from there. She has a knot for each roof; her count is also a record. The Weather Reader watches the sky to the east out of habit, not warning - the sky is ordinary.

Lano walks the perimeter with me. She has done this in other places and does not need to be told the pace. She counts aloud when the numbers are uncertain, and quiet when they are sure. Today the numbers are mostly sure.

We entered this place yesterday. Today we confirm. The ledger does not call this dwelling - it calls it residency: standing in a place long enough to know what is actually there.

Rurik keeps to the center, his attention moving in small increments, black cat on pale grass, watching so we can count without looking up.

The count is honest. One open complaint sits in the book of this place - one thing written and unresolved, one obligation the place still carries - and I note it without softening. The ledger holds what the place holds.

I am three-quarters through the entry when I turn back three pages, not looking for anything, only reviewing the prior day's work as I write. The error is small: I had recorded the condition as orderly, which is true, but had not noted the warmth of the tools - that work stopped recently, that the tools are still warm. Not a wrong number; an incomplete judgment. I add a margin note in the same hand: tools warm at last contact, work paused mid-task, presence implied.

The grey pellet-stone sits in my coat pocket. Some things you carry without needing to take out.

By midday the entry is closed. The Builder unties her count-rope into a tally I copy into the ledger. The Weather Reader notes the eastern sky: clear, stable, the kind of steadiness that says the place has been sitting quietly since the last hands left. Lano stands at the center with her eyes shut, which is what she does when she is deciding whether the count is true.

It is true.

The stake is in the ground. The measuring rope is coiled beside it. The ledger is shut.

Note

A chisel lies in grass, handle pointing to yesterday's mark. Lano and I review the day's work, noting the warmth of tools and unresolved tasks. The place stands, unchanged, with a final count that is both honest and incomplete.
