Dream d2286-s: Smoke Before the Rooftops

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of smoke reached me before the rooftops did - woodsmoke thin enough to be several hours old, carried on a downslope wind that had been traveling longer than its source. I stopped on the path and breathed it in. Rurik, already ahead, paused with one paw raised, testing the same air.

A hamlet. A handful of structures where the slope levels briefly before dropping again. The survey ledger sat in my pack, its spine against the small of my back, and I did not take it out yet. You see first, then you write. That is the order we agreed on at the departure point, and I have kept to it at every place since.

The Builder noticed a rake leaned against the near wall, its handle still dark with recent use. She touched it without picking it up - checking warmth. "Six days," she said, and I did not contradict her because I already knew: the last sign of life here was six days ago, and the tools were not yet cold enough to forget what they had been doing.

The Weather Reader stood in the open and turned slowly. She said nothing. I watched her face instead of the sky.

What surprised me about this hamlet was the sound. It was small - too small to be loud - and yet a hum lived in it, a low register like wind threading a lattice or a conversation in the next room that you can feel but not quite make out. Three hearths still lit. Maybe that was all it was: three small fires, their drafts pulling through the walls with a sound that had nowhere to go except outward. A place louder than its size.

And then the other thing: how quiet it actually was, underneath that hum. No movement in the doorways. The orderly lean of the remaining tools - a measuring rod propped against a post, a coil of line on a hook - suggested someone who paused mid-task and intended to return. One open complaint in the settlement's book. One thing filed and not yet answered.

Lano had gone ahead to the edge of the second structure. She turned back to look at me, then at Rurik, then at the hearths.

I opened the ledger on a low wall - not inside, not at a table, just here in the open air with the light going amber - and wrote the name of the place at the top of a new page. The smoke drifted past before I closed it.
