Dream d2274-s: Warm Tool, Garbled Sky

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the commons sat below the ridge and the light came down the hillside at an angle that should have been comforting. It was not. I had been counting this place for two days now. I knew the width of the central paths, the count of the water stations, the condition of both main halls. Today I was working the eastern outbuildings, measuring and writing each one before moving to the next.

The place is clean. That was clear from the first hour, and it does not change with familiarity. Two hands built it, and they built with attention - the paths were laid by intention, not wandered into existence, and everything sits in its assigned place. But there are thirteen open complaints in this settlement's book. I had read each one by lamplight last night. The number does not soften.

Rurik moved the perimeter ahead of me, black shape against grey grass. Lano ranged at the edge of the commons, her ears moving.

I was at the eastern foundation wall, measuring its depth, when the relay tower at the far end of the commons flickered on. Not cleanly. The beacon fired in a pattern that was wrong in a way I could not name - the rhythm broke mid-sequence, reset, broke differently. I stopped walking.

Lano's ears went flat. She turned toward the tower, body dropping, and barked once: short, hard, final. The Weather Reader stopped at the waterpoint. Rurik came around the outbuilding corner without hurrying, and said nothing.

The Builder arrived from the storehouse side, measurement cord over her shoulder. She stopped when she saw where everyone's attention had gone.

"How long?" she asked.

"Just started," I said.

She nodded once.

The Weather Reader moved toward the tower, her head tilted, listening to something the rest of us could not hear. Whatever the sky held above this place, the tower was not putting it out correctly. The signal scrambled at the source, or something upstream was corrupting it before it arrived, and none of us could see which.

Rurik crouched at the foundation and I saw what he had found: a level-gauge set exactly on the lip of the stone, bubble perfectly centered. Placed with care. Cold - not from being dropped, but from sitting while whoever set it had been elsewhere for longer than intended.

I took out the ledger and wrote: relay beacon distorted. Pattern non-standard. East foundation: gauge, cold, set with precision. Status: open.

The lamp at the corner of the commons burns, low and steady, against nothing I can name.
